Craniosacral Therapy and Trauma

When we have experienced Trauma in our lives, it leaves an imprint in the tissues of the body.

For example, a rape victim may suffer from pelvic discomfort, pain in lower back/pelvis region. They may also have issues around the neck if they were strangled in the rape.

When such a client comes from Craniosacral therapy. I assess the body using a light touch to the ankles and i am guided to the area where the stress, pain, fear is held.

These clients may not want to be touched in these areas, so i will often work from an area that is close, for example ,I place my hands on the lower rib cage , along the respiratory diaphragm, or I may stay at the feet or head.

The space is safe. The client needs to know that.

The therapist is grounded, present and can hold space for the client without Ego, with love and compassion and intention to the clients needs on this day.

We are not here to drag anything out that does not surface on its own.

The body guides the session.

Our bodies are amazing, they bring to the table what we are ready to release, not what the therapist things needs releasing, so we sit in a grounded, connected safe space for our client.

Using an Technique called SER ( Somato Emotional Release)

I guide the client to feel into what they are feeling in the body, they may feel a cold, a deep deep cold in the traumatized areas, or they often feel numb, or totally disconnected from a body part.

I will guide the client to connect , This can take time and will vary from client to client.

Some clients will connect quickly ,others may take several sessions until they slowly and carefully and gently begin to feel their bodies. There is no quick fix. When the body is ready, it will happen.

Once connection is made , our inner wisdom will guide us on what the body needs to let go of, recieve or even to just acknowledge what is there.

Release of Emotions from the tissues of the body allow us a freedom, a sense of space, a lightness, warmth comes back into the space, The breath becomes easier, the voice clearer and flows easier.

Trauma is heavy, it weighs us down, by releasing the Pain, the Anger The Fear , it lifts that weight and clients actually say, I feel lighter in my body.

We do not have to live in a body weighed down by Trauma.

The story is the story, but the emotion attached to it can be set free.

Clients will testify that, certain triggers dont trigger them anymore or they are less triggered.

Every now and agin it may be necessary to do what i call a maintenance session, to reconnect with the body, to acknowledge our bodies and feel safe in them.
